The Instagram community has grown rapidly over the past year, as the platform has grown to more than 700 million monthly users. With that growth comes the challenge of ensuring the Instagram experience is positive for everyone. Over the past 6 months, Instagram has been working on a new feature that gives people more options to create and share the photos and videos they care about.

The new “Reels” format that Instagram launched has enabled users to post longer videos. But there are also some other exciting features that may appeal to the creative community on Instagram. For example, the new format that Instagram launched will let users create a reel of up to 10 videos that play in succession. Previously, Instagram had a 15-sec limit on videos. Now, they’ve made it such that any video less than 15 min is just a series of still photos that play automatically in succession. All users have to do is simply create a video to upload and Instagram’s new “Reels” format will handle the rest. Also, users will be able to add music to their videos, which is not something that was previously available. Instagram is making a change to its video platform.

Here’s what else you need to know about the changes to the videos on Instagram:
Discovery: If you create a reel and have a public account, it will also be eligible to be recommended and seen by more people on Instagram. This currently applies to reels that are under 90 seconds. If your account is private, your videos will only be shown to your followers.
The profile will also consolidate the video and Reels tabs on your profile, so there is one home for all your videos.
Past posts: Previous videos posted before this change will remain as videos and won’t become reels.
